Week 35 ,St Croix and the Beast:

Six days to go before Ironman St Croix. This week the training volume comes down again for a mini-taper before a race. Last week the training hours were a little over 22 and this week including the race, 11.54 hours. I had a solid three weeks of preparation and used the time to work on problem areas and potential emerging injury spots.

Thus far, this is the best I’ve felt before a race and I’m expecting a better outing than NOLA just a few weeks ago. Certainly my swim can be better!

As of this writing, Jesse from Qt2 has a time race goal for me of 5:05. This is slower than my last race and due largely by the fact that the bike course is significantly harder than the flat New Orleans’s loop. (See picture above). I have been working on my bike and decided to switch some of the gearing to a 12/28 because of the hills and specifically a hill called, “The Beast”. I also have a few areas that I will focus on with the race such as a better swim, being more patient on the bike and maintaining pace on the run with working on a negative split.

Kona Slots:
Based on last year’s race results, a 5:05 finish would put me in approximately the 8th spot in terms of finish for my AG. The other interesting aspect, last year Kona slots went at 4:49. That’s a wide margin to make-up based on my projected finish. Jesse is ALWAYS dead-on, but you never know. It would be so nice to get that out of the way before Placid!!

Face Book and Friends:
The power of the internet and friends is still to this day an amazing thing to me. Thanks’ to all who have sent your kind and motivating words over these past 35 weeks. They fuel me during all the lonely workouts and many hours of sacrifice...
I’ll blog on route to the Virgin Islands and after the race. Wish me “Luck”.
