Week 36 from Rest to Speed
Well, what a nice rest week last week. Our rest weeks of lower volume training are for most normal people, the hardest week of training they will ever endure. 11.5 hour of training for the whole week is like a cake walk! It was nice putting a little weight back on for the week (6 lbs). However, I think I lost all of that this morning with a 2 hour BSE (Best Sustainable Effort) bike ride and a 30 minutes Z2/Z1 run followed by 1 hour of core. If you're not close to puking, your not doing them correctly!
This week, we vault into 22 plus hours and into building speed for the next push to placid. As of today, I have 75 days of preparation until race day in Placid. My coach Jesse has assured me that he is very much going to push me until I get as close to the breaking point as possible. Again, being NOT normal, when I hear things like that I get all excited and a big smile stretches across my face. This motivates me to the hilt.
Last night, I was sitting breaking bread with Jesse and I specifically asked him what he thought the odds were for someone like me earning a Kona slot this year. He guessed that it was somewhere near the vicinity of 300,000 to 1. Please insert broad-based grin here!!
In the near term, I’m gearing up for another Half Ironman in about three weeks (my 4th in 6 months). It’s called Mooseman, (NH) and it’s a local race for the first time in a while. It will be interesting to see how I fair with more local athletes and a less international showing. One can never tell. However, there is one thing for sure; the course and temperatures are going to be much easier than my last two destinations’.
Soon after that, I enter into a training camp weekend. Feeling good and energized…

What is Z1/Z2?
I'm betting that Mooseman temps could be pretty warm...similar to new orleans.
Hi,
Z1/Z2 refers to the ranges of my heart rate zone. For example, a Z1 run Heart rate for me would be 146-157 and Z2 (Zone 2) would be from 157-168. They are different ranges for bike and run.
